TIMMINS -- Mushkegowuk Council Grand Chief Jonathan Solomon and Timmins Mayor George Pirie signed an agreement Feb. 26 in Timmins that will see the city and Mushkegowuk Council work together to build more vibrant communities, and to foster positive socio-economic outcomes that will benefit everyone.
"I think we just got married," said Mushkegowuk Grand Chief Jonathan Solomon.
"Our people are here for a reason. It may be health, education, employment or just a lack of housing back home and they're here so the services that are provided to them are from this city so we got to find a way to develop with these organizations like health, education, policing or whatever."
The mayor of Timmins wants to see this agreement as the beginning of reconciliation in Canada.
"We're on the ground living it," said George Pirie.
"If we don't start this conversation it will never happen. It had to start someplace. So let's start this here and have the rest of the country pay attention."
