Mushkegowuk Cup bring hundreds of hockey lovers to Timmins
It is a hockey weekend in Timmins – with hundreds of First Nations children from across the region and beyond are putting their skills to the test in the 15th annual Mushkegowuk Cup.

(Sergio Arangio/CTV News Northern Ontario)Around 700 participants from Mushkegowuk Territory and other parts of the country are gathering in four area arenas for friendly competition.
Organizers told CTV News it is an opportunity for Indigenous children to experience a larger community and enjoy the sport they love with people from across the nation.
“It means a lot for the kids, they love it,” Richard Soloman, one of the tournament’s organizers.
“They get to do, like, some of the shopping, too, around. Some newer equipment, if they need it. It’s just the friendship of the kids getting to know other kids from different communities. They live coming up here to play hockey. Different arena, different style, different people to play against, instead of just playing at home.”
The competition continues throughout the weekend, a full schedule can be found on the event’s social media pages.
There are also other events planned throughout the weekend as well, including appearances by the 3Nolans — Ted Nolan and his sons Brandon and Jordan, who all played in the NHL. The Nolans will appear at the Mountjoy Arena, the McIntyre Arena and the Archie Dillon Sportsplex on Feb. 17 to sign cards and take photos.
