Update:

The election in Sault Ste. Marie was over quickly.

About half an hour after polls closed, results showed incumbent Mayor Christian Provenzano was a winner once again.

Provenzano had an easy time defeating his nearest opponent, Rory Ring from the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce, with Ted Johnston finishing third.

The mayor-elect said during his campaign that he would continue to fight for Sault Ste. Marie to get the ferrochrome smelter that Noront Resources will build in either the Soo or Timmins.

When it came to voting for city councillors, it was a new wrinkle in city this year, as there are now only five wards instead of six.

CITY COUNCIL

The Sault Ste. Maire city council will now be made up of five returning councillors and five new ones.

In Ward One, Paul Christian is returning along with newcomer Sandra Hollingsworth.

Ward Two chose two challengers, Luke Dufour and Lisa Vezeau-Allen.

Matthew Shoemaker has been re-elected in Ward Three, and Donna Hillsinger has unseated Judy Hupponen in the second seat for that ward.

Susan Thayer will retain her seat as Ward Four trustee, with 66% of the vote, as will incumbent Sandra Edwards of Ward Five with 53% of the vote.

All five incumbents for the Huron-Superior Catholic School Board will retain their positions, John Caputo, Leslie Cassidy-Amadio, Gary Trembinski, Tony D’Agostino, and Sandra Turco.
