Mullet calendar raises money for Sault ARCH Hospice
A hairstylist in Goulais River, north of Sault Ste. Marie, is helping to bring back a once popular hairstyle.
In this case, the return of the mullet is also helping raise money for a cause. Kayla Matthews, owner of Backwoods Salon, said she has long had a soft spot for the ‘business in the front, party at the back’ style.
"One day I was sitting there, trimming up one of my client’s mullets, and I thought, how cool would it be to have a Goulais mullet of the month calendar?" said Matthews.
"As soon as I put it out there, I had tons of people who wanted in … I actually had to narrow it down because of the amount of people that reached out, which is amazing. It's easy to find mullets in Goulais."
All proceeds from the calendar sales will go to ARCH Hospice.
"When she told me about this mullet calendar, I was like c'mon, this is amazing," said Jenna Polutanovich, volunteer and project coordinator at ARCH.
"We're so lucky to have her come up with such a creative idea to raise money for ARCH."
Matthews said she couldn't have done it without photographer Cheryl Proulx, who she said captured all of the photos and did all of the editing free of charge.
'IT'S EASY TO FIND MULLETS IN GOULAIS'
Matthews is a regular volunteer at ARCH, providing hair styling services to residents.
She usually makes the rounds with her dog Bandit, who also provides palliative care to residents through pet therapy.
"He is the snuggliest, smoochiest guy in the world and they absolutely love him," said Matthews.
Those wanting to purchase a calendar can reach out to Matthews through her business, Backwoods Salon. They can also be purchased at the Goulais River Country Store.
Meantime, ARCH Hospice is always looking for donations and volunteers. Those who are interested can reach out directly to ARCH.
