The local chapter of the MS Society is dealing with a major theft and the loss of thousands of dollars in cash and cheques from its downtown Sudbury office.

Sudbury’s MS Society offers support and services to people living with the autoimmune disease multiple sclerosis and their families.

Organization officials says the break and enter happened sometime after 4pm on Monday, May 13.

Natalie Labbee helps run the office.  She says she believes over $15,000 is gone, much of it from the recent ‘carnation campaign,’ an annual fundraiser.

“Myself, I’ve devoted five years of my life to the success of this chapter, and my volunteers worked so hard, especially on this campaign. The logistics of the carnation campaign are immense and people cannot even understand. The amount of support that we get from businesses and organizations to support our campaign, restaurants... It’s phenomenal, but this is really going to hit our chapter really hard.” said Labbee.

She says she is worried that some donated cheques made out to the MS Society can be altered by the thieves.  She hopes people can stop payment on donation cheques, and re-issue them.
