The City of Timmins has some big plans for this year’s Canada Day festivities.

Organizers unveiled the plan Thursday saying the festivities will begin at 11 am on July 1 at the Mountjoy Historical Park.

There will be musical acts all day, pontoon cruises on the Mattagami River, and the debut of the Mountjoy Farmer's Market in its new location.

An extensive fireworks display will conclude the country's 152nd birthday celebrations, all thanks to two dozen local corporate sponsors. Their financial contributions will completely cover the cost and will also pay for another fireworks show during this year’s Great Canadian Kayak Challenge and Festival in August.

Guy Lamarche is the manager of Tourism Timmins.

“At the end of the day, these festivals are very expensive, and not every taxpayer has the appetite to see their tax dollars support these, so it's very important for the corporate community to step up the way they've stepped up. The same can be said to many of the other festivals that the city is directly responsible for hosting.” said Lamarche.

Paul Woodward is the fireworks sponsorship coordinator for the city’s Canada Day celebrations.

“This year, there's going to be some special emphasis put on the grand finale and a better part of the funds per show will go up in the last three minutes of the show. So, it's going to be intense, it's going to be something like most have never seen and I'm very excited about that.” said Woodward.

The city says the bridge on Algonquin Boulevard will be closed for both fireworks shows, making it a great place to view from.
