Teens accused of stealing vehicle at gunpoint in the Sault
Two teenage suspects are in custody after Ontario Provincial Police conducted a high-risk takedown of a vehicle following an armed robbery of a vehicle in the Sault.
The pair were arrested after fleeing the Sault and heading east on Highway 17 in the stolen vehicle.
The incident began Monday morning at 2 a.m.
“The Sault Ste Marie Ontario Provincial Police, Batchewana First Nation Police Service and the East Algoma OPP responded to a stolen vehicle, which was stolen at gunpoint by two people in the City of Sault Ste. Marie,” the OPP said in a news release.
City police were able to track the stolen vehicle using the vehicle’s GPS system. It left Thessalon and travelled east on Highway 17.
“Shortly before 4 a.m., the OPP observed the vehicle at a gas station in the community of Mississauga First Nation,” police said.
“Once the vehicle stopped, officers conducted a high-risk takedown and safely arrested two people. Police also recovered two BB guns in the vehicle.”
The 17-year-old driver from North York was issued two provincial offence notices and charged with driving with a G1 licence without having a qualified driver in the vehicle and unnecessarily slow driving.
Both suspects were transferred to city police in the Sault. Later Monday afternoon, the Sault police service said one of the suspects was a 19-year-old from Thunder Bay. It emerged they had pointed the guns at a rideshare driver and ordered him out of the vehicle.
Sault police have charged them with several weapons offences, including robbery using a firearm. They are being held ahead of a bail hearing.

An earlier version of this story said both suspects were from the Toronto area. However, police have updated their information to say one person was from Thunder Bay, Ont.
