SUDBURY -- Rainbow District School Board has confirmed a positive case of COVDI-19 at Sudbury high school, Lo-Ellen Park in the city's South End, sending two classes of home to isolate.

"The individual who tested positive for COVID-19 is currently self-isolating and being monitored by Public Health Sudbury & Districts," said Norm Blaseg, director of education with Rainbow District School Board, in a statement posted on the school's Facebook page at 12:30 a.m. Friday. "At this time, two classes have been dismissed effective immediately up to and including November 4, 2020. Affected students and parents/guardians have been notified."

"Public health will directly contact all parents/guardians of students and all school personnel who have been identified as close contacts," said Blaseg. "Simply passing by an infected person in the hallway is not considered close contact, and the risk of spreading the virus this way is extremely low."

The school remains open for in-person classes.

This comes after four new positive cases of the disease were confirmed in Greater Sudbury Thursday night, doubling the number of active cases in the city. There have been six new infections confirmed in Sudbury since Tuesday.

Since the pandemic began, there have been 118 positive cases of COVID-19 in the Sudbury and Manitoulin Districts, with the majority, 108, within Greater Sudbury. There have been 110 cases that have recovered, including two deaths.

More to come on this developing story.
