In the span of just a few days, Sudbury police officers handed out more than 100 tickets in the construction zone along Municipal Road 80.
In a media release issued on Wednesday, the Greater Sudbury Police Service said officers laid 158 offence notices to motorists traveling ‘well above’ the posted speed limits.
Police said the crackdown as the result of several complaints of speeding vehicles in the area.
“Greater Sudbury Police would like to remind the public to slow down and drive with caution in and around all construction zones,” reads a statement from police.
“Even minor increases in speed can have devastating results in the event of collision.”
Ontario law doubles speeding fines in construction zones when workers are present.
Police officials said the fine for speeding in a construction zone when workers are present is: $5.00 per kilometer (1-19 kilometres per hour over the maximum speed limit) and $7.50 per kilometer (20-29 kilometres per hour over the maximum speed limit).
