Sault shoplifting suspect slapped security guard, police say

A 37-year-old has been charged after a security guard in Sault Ste. Marie was attacked by a shoplifting suspect June 30.

The incident took place around 1:30 p.m. at a business on Great Northern Road.

“While at the business, the accused selected items from store shelves and attempted to leave without paying for them,” Sault police said in a news release Tuesday.

“When security personnel attempted to stop the accused, the accused struck one victim in the hand and face. Security personnel did detain the accused. The victim sustained minor physical injuries.”

The suspect was charged with robbery and was released on an undertaking. They have a court date of Sept. 9.
