A Sault Ste. Marie police officer has been arrested and charged with sexual assault.

Sudbury police were called in to investigate the allegation reported last month.

Now, a 59-year-old man, whose name has yet to be released, is charged with one count of sexual assault.

In a written statement, Sault Ste. Marie Police Chief, Hugh Stevenson says:

"The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service takes the conduct of its members, on and off duty, very seriously. The community expects and deserves its officers to conduct themselves with the utmost integrity. We have faith that the judicial system will consider all of the evidence available."

Sudbury police say the accused was suspended from duty with pay, as per the Police Services Act.

An additional investigation of misconduct is also under way.
