A 67-year-old driver has been charged after a vehicle in Sault Ste. Marie sped through a stop sign and crashed into a cemetery.

The incident took place Wednesday evening at 6, Sault police said in a news release.

“Communicators received a report of a single motor vehicle collision near the intersection of Peoples Road and Fourth Line,” the release said.

“Officers were dispatched to the scene. An investigation revealed the accused had failed to stop at a stop sign while travelling at a high rate of speed – almost colliding with another motor vehicle – before crashing into a stone wall at the entrance of a cemetery, exiting the vehicle, and running into the woods.”

Police found the accused hiding in the woods and placed them under arrest.

“Officers read the accused a demand for a breath sample and they refused to provide one,” police said.

Charges include operation while impaired, refusal to comply with a breath demand, dangerous operation and failure to stop after an accident.
