With the Porcupine Health Unit area on track with the provincial reopening plan, medical officer of health Dr. Lianne Catton said she supports local businesses that are implementing proof-of-vaccination policies for customers or staff.

Catton said it's an added measure to keep the community safe from COVID-19. Although entirely up to each individual business, the effort is welcome.

“(We) really need to recognize, respect and applaud businesses and workplaces who are taking the measures that they feel necessary to protect their staff and their patrons," Catton said.

“I think (proof-of-vaccination is) something that we will continue to see evolve and definitely appreciate the tough decisions that some have made."

Catton stressed the most important thing right now is for people to keep working together to make sure the region can continue its momentum of low case counts.

The health unit’s vaccination numbers as of July 11 show around 63 per cent of the PHU population is fully vaccinated, though Catton said that number needs to reach at least 75 per cent before the region can continue reopening.
