A 23-year-old novice driver has been charged with multiple offences following an incident Canada Day that started on Highway 11 in Callander.

Ontario Provincial Police spotted the vehicle speeding about 47 km/h above the speed limit on Highway 11 around 1 p.m.

“Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but it fled onto Peever Line,” the OPP said in a news release Tuesday.

“A short time later, Almaguin OPP were called to a single motor vehicle collision located on Forestry Road in Laurier Township. After investigation, it was determined this was the same vehicle that had fled from police earlier.”

The vehicle was towed and the driver, who is from Aurora, was arrested. Charges include impaired driving, failing to stop for police, speeding, having a passenger when still a novice driver and not being accompanied by a qualified driver.

The accused was issued a 90-day driver's licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. They are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on July 16.

Correction

This story has been updated with a correction on the original news release from the OPP that the driver was charged with speeding and not stunt driving.
