OPP investigating fatal fire near Powassan

An investigation is underway after one person died in a residential fire near Powassan early Thursday morning.

Few details have been released, but Ontario Provincial Police said they responded to a fire call on Highway 522, East Mills Township, around 5:04 a.m., along with the Argyle Fire Department and the Restoule Fire Department.

Now the OPP, the Office of the Fire Marshal and the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario are investigating what happened.

"While the investigation is still in the preliminary stages, police believe there is no risk to the public at this time," said a news release Friday.

"Members of the community can expect to see an increased presence of OPP personnel and vehicles in the area as the investigation continues."
