In Sudbury, the Northern Masters Curling Bonspiel is well underway at the Idylwylde Country Club.

The tournament is a big draw, with teams traveling long distances to return year after year.

The five sheets at the Idylwylde will see some of the best "older" curlers in the north this week, with the 17th edition of the annual competition.

"We have a total of 26 teams this year and 11 of those are from outside the Sudbury area." said event organizer Patrick Thompson.

That includes the Brian Flaxey rink from New Liskeard, a community about two and a half hours north-east of Sudbury.

"I haven't met a bad guy yet. It's a hoot playing with these guys. I love it!" said Skip Brian Flaxey.

The 65-year-old has been curling for more than half of his life and some of his family members are well known on the pebbled ice. His nephew, Caleb Flaxey is the head coach for the Brad Jacobs rink, and Caleb's wife, Allison, is a champion Canadian curler.

"Actually, I’m probably the first curler in our family and I just got my granddaughter into it too, and she is not a bad curler." said the skip.

Flaxey's teammate, Mark Sargent, is a relative newcomer to the sport, picking it up once he retired, six years ago. Sargent now plays Vice on Team Flaxey.

"The past couple of years I have progressed quite a bit. I started out as a lead and progressed through curling." said Sargent.

Curlers say the event is more about the fun and socializing, however some admit they are “in it to win it.”

The tournament ends with a championship on Thursday.
