SUDBURY -- The Ministry of the Solicitor General has confirmed an inmate at Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre in Sault Ste. Marie has tested positive for COVID-19.

"The impacted inmate was housed alone in the intake unit," said Kristy Denette, spokesperson for the Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General, in an email to CTV News Monday afternoon. "All newly admitted inmates are housed in a separate area for 14 days, and all inmates are tested for COVID-19, with their consent, prior to joining the general population.

"The inmate is in medical isolation and receiving medical care, as appropriate. The institution is working closely with local public health to protect the health and safety of our staff and those in our custody."

As of Monday morning, there is only one active case in the Sault Ste. Marie area after three recent cases were reported as resolved by Algoma Public Health.
