SUDBURY -- Sudbury's Procurement, Employment and Partnerships Conference awards gala was held Monday night honouring several Indigenous businesses.

The conference is put on by the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce and the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business.  

CTV's Marina Moore was on hand to present the award for Indigenous Enterprise of the Year, which was awarded to Waubetek Business Development Corporation.

Waubetek has been providing financing and economic development services to First Nation businesses in northeastern Ontario since 1989.

"It was quite surprising to receive this award for the work that we do in advancing the First Nation's business and economic development opportunities. I mean, we really feel like we owe it to entrepreneurs that we've supported over the years," said Jason Peltier, manager of business services at Waubetek.

"I think it helps the rest of industry recognizes that Sudbury is a hub for business, Indigenous and resource-based throughout Canada," said Neil Milner, second chair for Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce board.

Other winners included long-time caterer Hiawatha Osawamick, who received the award for Indigenous Entrepreneur of the Year, and Bagone'an Jacob &Samuel Drilling received the Business Partnership of the Year award.
