A North Bay man is dead after falling out of a canoe that tipped over Saturday while he and a friend were hunting ducks in the St. Charles area, south east of Sudbury.
It happened on the Nepewassi River between Hagar and St. Charles.
Police say 23-year-old Jeremy Ouellet of North Bay was in a canoe with another man when the vessel capsized.
The second hunter, 23-year-old Marc-Andre Bouffard from Warren, managed to swim to safety.
Ouellet's body was recovered from the river Sunday morning.
Police say neither man was wearing a life jacket.
Officers would like to remind boaters that a lifejacket is your best defense against cold-water shock.
Research shows that unexpected immersion in cold water is a serious risk to life if a boater is not wearing a floatation device. This is true despite the boater's experience, closeness to shore, and even swimming ability.
A sudden fall into cold water can seriously affect breathing, nerves, and muscle strength. A lifejacket gives you thermal protection and also keeps you buoyant.
