The long-planned ten-bed hospice in North Bay is getting the money it was hoping for from the province, even after a change in government.

Mathilde Gravelle Bazinet is the Board Chair for the Nipissing Serenity Hospice.

It's been seven years in the making but you know sometimes the difficult roads bring you to a beautiful destination and that's what this destination is." said Gravelle Bazinet.

Over a million dollars was promised last fall under the Wynne Liberals, and the hospice committee heard the good news Friday that $1.5-million in provincial money is on its way.

Funding is provided through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation and will help build the residential hospice to provide palliative care for terminally ill patients in the Nipissing and Parry Sound districts and will play a role in filling the gap in continued end-of-life care.

The news couldn’t come at a better time than groundbreaking day for the $7.4-million future Nipissing Serenity Hospice project.

Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli says once built, the Nipissing Serenity Hospice will be a home away from home, helping those who need it most.

"It will be a peaceful, caring and supportive environment where our friends, family and neighbours can receive the dignity, compassion and quality of care they deserve in their final days." said Fedeli.

The hospice will also create 21 new jobs, 14 full-time and seven part-time.

Now the dedicated team behind the project says they can't wait to share it with the North Bay community.
