There was a close call for a 70-year-old pilot from Cobalt Saturday morning *in the Temiskaming area.

His float plane went down on the north end of Gillies Lake in Coleman Township.

Police say mechanical problems caused the plane to crash just after 10:30 am Saturday when the pilot attempted to take off.  The plane was directed towards the lake and landed abruptly causing damage to the aircraft.

The pilot and two passengers were not injured and were rescued by a boater.  The plane was towed to the nearby docks.

*CORRECTION: The location of the crash, Gillies Lake, is in the Temiskaming District, NOT Timmins as originally reported.
