Original:

A 25-year-old man arrested in a stabbing incident that happened in Sudbury on Monday afternoon has now been charged with attempted murder.

Police say they received several calls regarding a stabbing outside of a busy shopping area on the east end of Marcus Drive in the city's New Sudbury neighbourhood just before 3:45 pm on June 3.

Alexander Stavropoulos, 25, is accused of attacking a 35-year-old woman and her nine-month-old child.

They say the woman sustained a stab wound to her neck and remains in critical condition in hospital. Her child sustained several bruises as a result of being struck while the knife was still in the man's hand.

A community member intervened in the altercation, disarming the accused attacker, and holding him down until police arrived.

Stavropoulos was transported to hospital after the attack with self-inflicted wounds.

Police say the vicious attack was random and the individuals were unknown to each other.

Stavropoulos has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and breach of probation.

He is being held in custody, after being treated and released from the hospital.  He’s to appear again by video remand on June 6.

Anyone with information related to this incident who has not talked to an Officer is asked to contact Police at 705-675-9171.

Stavropoulos was involved in an altercation at the Downtown Sudbury Transit Terminal last year, where he tried to break into the security office while armed with two knives. He was subsequently shot by police after charging at them with the knives. In that case, Stravropoulos pleaded guilty to possession of a dangerous weapon and was released after serving 99 days in jail. During that trial, the court heard that Stavropoulos had been suffering from depression and a marijuana-induced psychosis when the incident occurred.  He was to get treatment for anger management and psychiatric issues.
