Algoma Public Health is warning anyone who uses street drugs to take extra precautions after a rise in suspected opioid poisonings.

In the first week of May, officials in the Algoma region say there were more than 17 visits to the emergency department for suspected opioid poisoning, more than eight cases confirmed, plus more than seven opioid poisoning related calls to Emergency Medical Services.

Health professionals say opioid poisonings can be fatal and that anyone who uses drugs should carry Naloxone and make sure they always have someone with them when they use.
