There's another report out saying northern Ontario exceeds the provincial average for teen pregnancies.

It's just one of the findings in a study done by Algoma Public Health in Sault Ste. Marie.

It took over a year for Algoma Public Health to research eight different categories and the Algoma Community Health Profile has some shocking stats.

Jordan Robson is an epidemiologist at Algoma Public Health.

"The adolescent pregnancy rate is something that really jumps off the screen. Not only because it's nearly double the provincial average, but also the implication of teenage pregnancies. It puts a lot of strain on the mothers and families and often it makes it more difficult to raise a child." said Robson.

Some of the other categories include: life expectancy, infection disease, substance use, and mental health.

This is the first time a report on these issues has been prepared since 2011.

Dr. Jennifer Loo is the associate medical officer of health at Algoma Public Health.

"The issues around preventive strategies, three out of four premature deaths in Algoma are preventable through healthy actions." said Loo.

It's not all doom and gloom for the Algoma region however.

Researchers say there is positive news in some of the categories.

"One thing we noted is that our kids are doing really well, above and beyond the other kids in Ontario when it comes to immunization and also when it comes to physical activity." said Loo.

Other notable numbers include the non-surprising demographics of the area, which show the Algoma region has an aging population.

Stats also show a significant number of the residents are living in low-income situations.
