A man wanted for first-degree murder in Alberta was arrested this week after police deployed a spike belt on Highway 17 near Schreiber, Ont.

David James Sietsma, 37, was wanted for the murder of Echer Marcial, 34, on March 14 of this year near Grand Prairie, Alta.

He was arrested when Ontario Provincial Police were dispatched May 30 to an incident near Gravel River.

“Investigation revealed the subject in question was seen travelling in a stolen vehicle,” the OPP said in a news release Friday.

Police spotted the vehicle and laid down a spike belt, but the vehicle kept going.

“The vehicle was later located in the area of Sunset Drive,” police said. “The driver was subsequently located and placed under arrest.”

Police quickly realized the man was wanted by the Grand Prairie Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Sietsma was brought back to the Nipigon OPP detachment and will be held in custody until returned to the Grand Prairie RCMP detachment.

Echer Marcial’s loved ones set up a Facebook page to collect tips on the case.
