Lydia Chubak

Lydia Chubak is a videojournalist with CTV News Northern Ontario covering Timmins and the surrounding area.

From a young age, her own mom would tell you, Lydia has always had a curiosity for what people have to say. She'll engage in conversation with anyone who'll participate.

In the early 90s, she studied English Literature for two years at Ottawa University and then transferred to the Broadcast Journalism Program at Canadore College. During that time she read weekend news on North Bay's CHCH/CKAT radio. Upon graduation, jobs in the business were tough to get. Her last words to her teachers were: "I'll move to Timmins if I have to."

Those famous last words landed Lydia in gold country in 1994 to begin a career with CTV News - Timmins (MCTV). The plan was to stay a year and move to a big city, but then as it often does...life happened!

After 7 years at the Timmins bureau as a Reporter/Anchor and within CTVs first pool of video-journalists, Lydia ventured out on her own to launch www.truenorthnews.com. It was an informative website serving the Timmins area. In 2004, she accepted an Anchor/VJ/Producing job at Eastlink TV and kept it for 13 years.

In April 2017, Lydia returned to CTV News Northern Ontario and says she's thrilled to be back.

"I saw it as an invigorating opportunity I couldn't pass up! Being a mobile journalist means I'm never in the office. All my gear fits in a backpack and I can file from just about anywhere. Northerners are resilient and ingenious. Every day reveals new perspectives to share. I love my job!"

Lydia grew up in Petawawa, Ontario where she still goes to visit her family. She's a mom to a daughter and a snuggly cat. She enjoys going for walks or runs on trails; cooking from scratch; reading insightful and heart-tugging books; and gets to a hot and sunny beach whenever she can.
