SUDBURY -- Within a matter of hours, Manitoulin Island OPP say they responded to two fires over the weekend. Just after 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 28, officers responded to a structure fire on Highway 540 in Robinson Township with the assistance of the local fire department.

A few hours later, at 10:35 p.m., police responded to a second structure fire on Nelson Road in Gordon Township with the assistance of the community's local fire department as well as the crew from nearby Billings Township. The location of the second fire is approximately 40 minutes east of the first fire.

Police say both residences were unoccupied at the time of the fires.

The OPP Forensic Identification Services, the Manitoulin OPP Crime Unit and the Ontario Fire Marshall are continuing with the investigation.

OPP is asking for the public's assistance, specifically if anyone saw anything suspicious during the early evening hours on Feb. 28 on Nelson Road.

Anyone with information regarding the person(s) responsible for these fires should immediately contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122 or their nearest police authority.
