SUDBURY -- Public Health Sudbury and Districts is reporting an outbreak at Wikwemikong Nursing Home on Manitoulin Island after a resident tested positive for COVID-19.

The resident is a woman in her 70s with no recent travel history or contact with a known case.

According to public health officials, the woman's point of exposure is unknown. She was tested as part of the province's targeted surveillance of long-term care homes.

In late March, elders of the Wikwemikong Nursing Home garnered global attention for a social media post that gently asked visitors to stay away from the long-term care facility during the pandemic, using the hashtag #itsnotaboutyou.

Other First Nation communities on Manitoulin Island have taken significant steps to prevent the virus from spreading to their territories, including the implementation of non-essential travel bans, supported by the Ontario Regionial Chief.

This is the first outbreak declared at a long-term care facility on Manitoulin Island.

This is a developing story. More to come.
