A 53-year-old Elliot Lake man is charged with firearms-related offences after reports he was riding on a bicycle with a gun around an apartment complex.

Officers were called to the complex's parking lot on Mississauga Avenue around 11 a.m. Aug. 13, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Wednesday.

The suspect was found a short while later at a home on Tokyo Crescent when he tried to evade officers.

"After a short altercation, he was safely arrested," OPP said.

"The handgun was safely recovered and it was only then that police learned it was an airsoft pistol made to look like a real gun."

The accused is charged with carrying a concealed weapon, having a weapon for a dangerous purpose and having a firearm or ammunition despite a prohibition order.

He is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice bail court in Blind River on Wednesday.
