SUDBURY -- A 28-year-old man in Sturgeon Falls found out the hard way that an E-bike can't outrun a police cruiser.

Ontario Provincial Police saw him blow though a stop sign Nov. 18 at 7:50 a.m. at the intersection of Levesque Street and Front Street in Sturgeon Falls.

"The officer attempted to stop the e-bike but it fled," police said in a news released Monday. "Shortly thereafter, another officer located and stopped it on Railway Street."

It turns out the E-bike didn't even have a chain, which police said made it impossible to use the pedals, "therefore making it modified, now rendering it a motor vehicle under the Highway Traffic Act."

The driver was also disqualified and was breaching court-ordered release conditions. When he was arrested, officers seized brass knuckles and knives.

The Sturgeon Falls man is now charged with two counts of weapons possession, fleeing from police, operating a vehicle while suspended and failing to comply with a release order.

He was held in custody and was scheduled to appear in bail court Monday in North Bay.
