A 50-year-old male driving a four-wheeler on Manitoulin Island was sent to hospital with minor injuries after a crash involving a car Friday afternoon, police say.

Emergency crews were called to a two-vehicle crash in an area off Rabbit Island Road in Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory around 2:30 p.m. June 7, Wikwemikong Tribal Police said in a news release Monday.

An investigation into the incident is continuing and Sgt. Jamie Peltier told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca that charges are pending.

"Anyone with information on this incident or any other investigation can contact the Wikwemikong Tribal Police at (705) 370-3141 or through the Communications Centre at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS," police said.

Peltier said last week was 'All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Week' and reminds riders to ensure they have insurance and wear helmets properly.

Under the Off-Road Vehicles Act in Ontario, the maximum speed ATVs can travel is 50 km/h on roads with a posted limit of 50 km/h or more. On roads with a posted limit of 50 km/h or less, ATVs are only permitted to travel at a maximum of 20 km/h.

There have been two fatalities involving ATVs in the northeast in less than two months.
