SUDBURY -- A 48-year-old man from Collingwood drowned over the weekend on Manitoulin Island, police say, while he was trying to push two children caught in the undertow toward shore.

The Manitoulin detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were called at 2:55 p.m. Aug. 29, responding with emergency medical crews and the Central Manitoulin Fire Department, to a call about a drowning at Carter Bay Beach in Carnarvon Township.

"Investigation revealed the person was swimming with two children," police said in a news release. "Undertow began to pull them further from shore. The individual was trying to push the children closer to shore and he was subsequently pulled under water."

The drowning victim has been identified as 48-year-old Damon Clarke.

A post-mortem examination has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

The investigation is ongoing under the direction of the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service. Foul play is not suspected.
