SUDBURY -- A 30-year-old man is facing several charges following a series of incidents in downtown Timmins on Wednesday evening at the intersection of Cedar Street and Algonquin Boulevard.

The man began yelling at passersby, and when he was approached by a pedestrian on the sidewalk, he slapped a drink out of the pedestrian’s hand.

"The suspect then approached a second pedestrian a short while later and proceeded to engage in an unprovoked attack on the 68-year-old male pedestrian by kicking him and pushing him to the ground," Timmins Police Service said in a news release Thursday.

"The pedestrian sustained injury in the form of scrapes to his knees, a cut to the top of his head, to his elbow and above his right eye."

Police officers soon arrived and were alerted to the suspect’s location by motorists who had stopped to help.

"The suspect was placed under arrest only after continuing to yell out assorted profanities," police said.

A search of the suspect yielded a Methamphetamine tablet.

"The suspect was transported to the Timmins Police station where he engaged in further disruptive behaviour resulting in additional Criminal Code charges being laid against him," police said.

"The pedestrian was treated for his injuries at the scene by responding paramedics and received further treatment at Timmins and District Hospital."

The man is now charged with causing a disturbance, uttering threats, assault, drug possession, breach of release conditions, and failing to comply with probation orders.

"The accused remains in police custody awaiting a bail hearing slated for (Thursday) morning at provincial court in Timmins to address the charges laid against him," police said.
