SUDBURY -- Update:

Sudbury Police have determined that the fire was caused by a secret cannabis extraction lab. Officers as well as members of the Ontario Fire Marshalls office have seized relevant evidence from the scene.

Sudbury police officials say the man injured in Friday's apartment fire on Barrydowne Road has been arrested and charged with arson along with drug-related charges in connection to the incident.

Staff Sergeant Daryl Adams said the 40-year-old male was taken to Health Science North for minor burns as a result of the fire and was taken into police custody after being cleared by doctors.

Sergeant Adams says the accused has been charged with:

  • Arson
  • Disregard for human life
  • Production under the Cannabis Act
  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking
  • Proceeds of crime

Officers have secured the man's apartment as the investigation continues along with the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office.

The accused has been released on bail on Saturday.

Police say no one else was injured in the fire and that there is no risk to the public at this time.

Authorities say they cannot disclose the cause of the fire.

It was a busy day for Sudbury fire crews with two significant calls Friday morning

The first involved a fire on Barrydowne Road around 10:30 a.m.

A passerby called 9-1-1 after spotting flames coming from the roof balcony of an apartment.

Sudbury fire crews were on scene within six minutes and fire and smoke damage has been contained to the one unit.

The person inside was taken to hospital with injuries.

There’s no word yet on an official cause, but an electrical fire is suspected.

The scene has now been turned over to police and the office of the Ontario Fire Marshal for further investigation.

Shortly after, crews were called to the Greater Sudbury Airport for reports of a carbon monoxide leak inside one of the hangars.

Officials say the CO levels were extremely high.

They managed to safely evacuate the affected building and those inside were treated on scene.
