Major international mining conference kicks off in Sudbury this week
The City of Greater Sudbury in partnership with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD,) is hosting the 2024 OECD Conference of Mining Regions and Cities this week.
Beginning Tuesday, delegates from around the globe will gather at the Holiday Inn on Regent Street for the four-day event to discuss practices and strategies.
Speakers include Canada’s Minister of Indigenous Affairs and First Nations Economic Reconciliation Greg Rickford, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Canada Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Indigenous Services Canada Patty Hajdu, Ontario Minister of Mines George Pirie, Greater Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre, Atikameksheng First Nation Gimaa Craig Nootchtai, Sudbury MP Viviane Lapointe, Timmins city councillor Steve Black and more than 60 others.
"I spent the last 20 years of my career involved in mining and am really excited and privileged to be able to attend this event, we're going to have some great key notes from other parts of the world and locally,” said Greater Sudbury Ward 5 councillor and Workplace Safety North President and CEO Mike Parent.
“Sudbury being the mining capital of the world, it's really great for us to be able to host this and for me to be able to participate in this."
Ward 7 councillor Natalie Labbee echoed Parent’s sentiment when she told CTV News that this is another more example of where Greater Sudbury can shine on the international stage.
This is the fifth OECD Conference of Mining Regions and Cities and the 2024 theme is ‘A shared vision for well-being in mining regions.’ The conference will focus on two key topics; partnering for meaningful development in mining regions and future-proofing regional mineral supply for the energy transition.
