In just eight days, Canadians will be able to buy and use cannabis legally, as the Trudeau government fulfills one of its major campaign promises.

Across the country, people will be able to buy it, grow it, and use it recreationally, but in Ontario, there are still many unanswered questions about how people will access it and what enforcement will surround it.

For many in Sudbury, life will be a lot different on October 17, however, some say the province just isn't ready for legal weed.

"You know who is ready for this? The black market." said Nickel Belt MPP France Gelinas.

The Ontario NDP says the Ford government won't be able to get its act together in time.

"Millions of Ontarians will light up and all of them will be lighting up black market cannabis because there is no way to have access." said Gelinas.

That access is only through the government's own online pot shop, which will serve as the exclusive legal marijuana retailer until next April.

But with a week to go, the site still isn't up and there is no word yet on what cannabis will cost, how it will be shipped, and how online age verification will work.

The provincial government says the answers are coming.

"Beginning next week, we will launch an awareness campaign to educate and inform people regarding the applicable rules." said Ontario Attorney General Caroline Mulroney.

As for police, Deputy Chief Al Lekun of Greater Sudbury Police Service says it will be business as usual.

"Our focus has been on providing our officers with the required training to address drug impaired driving." said Lekun.

And for those thinking of skirting the government's website next Wednesday, Lekun says it is the only legal way to purchase cannabis in the province of Ontario.

That is assuming it is up and running when the clock strikes midnight.

According to a City of Greater Sudbury spokesperson, it'll be up to the next council to decide if private pot shops will be permitted in the city. Municipalities can choose to opt-out of the PC government's plan to license private retailers.
