SUDBURY -- Laurentian University will continue to offer most of its courses online in the fall 2020 semester, the school announced Thursday.

In a news release, LU said some programs will have in-person classes, based on factors such as enrolment and specific program requirements.

“The safety of our community is most important to us," said Robert Hache, president and vice-chancellor of Laurentian University. "We look forward to September and having some students return to our classrooms on our campus.

"It will surely feel different, however, we are committed to finding the best way possible to deliver teaching and maximize learning. Our students deserve nothing less.”

The final decision on what programs will be offered on campus is expected by the end of June. Officials say a full plan including ensuring access to personal protective equipment, physical distancing and other recommendations by public health officials will be made.

Laurentian University was the first university in Canada to shut down campus operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In-person classes at the institution have been suspended since March 12.

LU joins Nipissing University in offering a majority of its courses online in the fall semester. A decision from Algoma University has not yet been made.

A memorandum of understanding regarding plans for next year was presented to the school's faculty association Thursday, which is expected to be heard by a special sitting of the Laurentian University Senate on Monday.
