Last day of the season for lifeguards at municipal beaches in Sudbury
SUDBURY -
Starting tomorrow, there will no longer be lifeguard supervision at municipal beaches in Sudbury. While the beaches will still be equipped with a reaching pole and ring buoy, lifeguards won’t return until next season.
"Children must be supervised and within arm's reach of an adult caregiver at all times," said the City of Greater Sudbury in a media release on Friday.
"Older children are reminded to swim with a buddy for greater safety."
Most lifeguards are post-secondary students who are set to return to school and as so, the city says the approved service level for lifeguarding at municipal beaches runs nine weeks throughout the summer.
With an extended heat warning still in effect, city officials say the lifeguard will remain on duty until 9:00p.m on Sunday, however, current public health guidelines might put a damper on the final day.
"Avoid swimming and other recreational water activities in the 48 hours after a heavy rainfall," reads a June 10 news alert posted on the Publich Health Sudbury and Distrcits' website.
"E. coli levels may increase during this time."
Washrooms facilities at all beaches will remain open from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. until the end of Labour Day weekend.
