A 21-year-old who was already on probation has been charged after an armed intruder entered a victim's home early in the morning Oct. 11 in the Town of Spanish.

In a news release Thursday, Ontario Provincial Police said they responded to the call on Doyle Street in the community around 4 a.m.

"Investigation determined an unwanted person armed with a knife was in the complainant's house and had brandished it multiple times, pointed it at the complainant in a threatening manner and left the residence," police said.

"Officers set up containment of the scene and were assisted by the OPP's critical incident command, the emergency response team and crisis negotiators."

When police received a warrant and were moving in at around 11 a.m., the suspect fled through a basement window. They were caught thanks to the help of the OPP canine unit.

Charges include assault with a weapon, obstructing police, weapons possession and two counts of violating probation.

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River and was remanded into custody.
