OPP in Kirkland Lake were busy with two violent incidents over the weekend.

They are investigating a murder and an assault that both happened on Saturday.

Officers responded to a call for service on Algonquin Avenue just after 8 pm on March 23.

68-year-old Brenda Lautaoja, of Kirkland Lake, was found deceased.

Now, her 33-year-old son, Troy Lautaoja, has been charged with second-degree murder.

The accused was taken into police custody and is scheduled to appear in bail court in Temiskaming Shores Monday, March 25.

Also in Kirkland Lake on Saturday, a teen was assaulted.

It happened around 6:15 pm on Hudson Bay Avenue where a 14-year-old male sustained a head injury.

He was taken to hospital for treatment.

CTV News spoke with OPP Constable Adam Gauthier regarding both matters:

“Obviously, the homicide is devastating on the community. We lost a member of the community who was well-known. And again, with another instance of aggravated assault, the concern of the citizens, of their safety, we want to remind them that the OPP is committed to public safety and that members should remain vigilant at all times of their own personal safety, as well.” said Gauthier.

He says that both matters are still under investigation and police have not determined if they are related or not.

Police are asking anyone with information to come forward to them directly or through Crime Stoppers anonymously.
