Mining giant Vale is cutting jobs in Sudbury.

The Brazilian mining company has laid off 18 employees from its operations in another cost-saving measure.

Vale says the cuts are in response to the evolving nature of its business.

Over the past year, the company has closed a century-old mine, shut down one of two furnaces, and a crushing plant to trim costs. And in the fall, 21 miners were let go.

Vale says the 18 workers in this latest round of cuts were holding service or support staff roles and no unionized miners were affected.

In a statement, Vale says:

"We acknowledge the impact this has on affected employees and their families and transitional support is being provided to those departing our organization. As we move forward, we will continue to operate on the principle of minimizing impacts on our workforce, as best we can, as we make necessary operational decisions according to our evolving business needs."

A company spokesperson says no further cuts are planned, but she can't speculate on what the future holds.
