IPV program making a difference, Sault police say

Share

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service says there has been a positive difference since increasing its focus on intimate partner violence.

The police service outlined the latest statistics at Thursday afternoon’s police board meeting.

To date, the new IPV program has yielded 271 callbacks, 14 further investigations, with four charges laid and six still under investigation.

Two sudden deaths on Boundary Road were recently determined to be murder-suicide and a case of intimate partner violence.

Police Chief Hugh Stevenson said there were no previous signs that would have led to officer involvement before the May 1 incident.

“There (were) no calls whatsoever in relation to anything close to an IPV prior to that situation,” Stevenson said.

“But I can tell you from our IPV project -- which is permanent now -- that it is working very well. Remember, we're there to deal with the victim/complainant at a different point where there's not as much stress.”

The next Sault Police Service Board meeting is in September.

More statistics on the IPV program will be available at that time.
