Intimate partner violence investigation leads to dramatic northern Ont. highway stop using a spike belt

Ontario Provincial Police have charged a suspect near Cochrane with impaired driving, dangerous driving and flight from police after responding to a 911 call this week.
On April 9, shortly after 11:30 p.m., James Bay OPP responded to a disturbance at a residence on Fear Road, in Fournier Township, west of the Town of Cochrane.
“As police were responding to the call, they observed a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed in a dangerous manner on Fear Road,” police said in a news release.
“Police followed the vehicle westbound onto Highway 11, and a tire deflation device, otherwise known as a spike belt, was successfully utilized, however, the vehicle continued westbound on Highway 11.”
The vehicle was safely brought to a stop in Calder Township, the driver was arrested, and it was determined that they had been consuming an alcoholic beverage.
A 46-year-old from Cochrane has been charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving, fleeing police and domestic mischief.
The accused was released and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in May in Cochrane.
