SUDBURY -- A centre that prides itself on helping some of the most vulnerable members of the community has officially opened up another door and even more possibilities.

The Independent Living Sudbury Manitoulin Centre opened the doors to its Merchmart on Feb. 14 as a way to generate some extra monthly income.

The new downtown store features household items, sporting goods, local artwork and even wheelchairs.

Direct funding coordinator, Angela Gray says the store is quite unique.

“We’re looking for accessible items because that’s one thing you don’t normally find in regular thrift stores,” said Gray.

The centre reduced its hours this winter after facing some financial troubles. The tenant that used to be located in the new thrift store left, taking away that monthly rent income. Because of that, officials decided to find a way to replace that money and give back to members  at the same time.

“It’s just a place where people with disabilities can learn how to become employable, and learn about cash and giving cash back, or working with stocking shelves. It’s a good learning process for people living with disabilities,” said Executive Director Robert DiMeglio.

All money raised through the store will stay in the community.

Twenty-five per cent of art sales go back to the centre and all other item prices are negotiable.

Gray says the new store is a way to move forward, "we’re a family and we’re going to stick together. We’re all pushing for Merchmart to make a positive impact with the city."

Several members and volunteers work in the store, including Heather Wise who has multiple art pieces on display. She says that the centre helped her get back on her feet when she needed it the most.

"It just feels wonderful to give back," said Wise.

Wise says Independent Living Sudbury Manitoulin helped her find a new career path and gave her connections and resources.

“Three years ago, I was an unhealthy widow. My husband died in my arms, a couple thousand dollars behind on taxes, on disability… and getting into the medical world as a personal care assistant… I couldn’t be happier with this," said Wise.

The Merchmart is looking for new and gently used items and accessible devices.
