SUDBURY -- Two people are facing charges after the North Bay police responded to a call Aug. 25 about an impaired driver on Highway 94 in the Municipality of Callander.

"The driver was reported to be slumped over the steering wheel," police said in a news release Thursday.

Police arrived in the area and found two people in a parking lot in a U-Haul van. After officers spoke with the occupants, the driver was arrested at the scene and brought back to the North Bay Police Service for further testing.

"Officers searched the vehicle incident to arrest and located a small amount of suspected white fentanyl, purple fentanyl and Percocet," police said.

A 29-year-old woman from North Bay is facing charges of impaired driving, and three counts of possession of a controlled substance.

The 19-year-old female passenger, from West Nipissing, is charged with three counts of drug possession. The suspects were released on undertakings with a date to attend the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on Oct. 27.

The woman's driver's licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

This incident marks 32 drivers charged under the criminal impaired driving laws in the North Bay Detachment in the year 2020, 10 of which were impaired by drug.
