Impaired arrests in the Sault: Driving in reverse, on the wrong side of the road

Sault police say recent impaired driving arrests in the city involved such dangerous acts as driving in reverse and driving on a sidewalk.
The first case occurred July 27 when police received reports around 8:45 p.m. of a vehicle driving erratically.
The reports included “driving in reverse, swerving into oncoming traffic, hitting a curb, driving through a stop sign, driving onto a sidewalk and stopping at a green light at an intersection,” police said in a news release Monday.
Police stopped the vehicle on Atwater Street but the 33-year-old driver refused to give a breath sample. Charges include operation while impaired, failure or refusal to comply with a breath demand and dangerous driving.
The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 26.
Then on July 30 around 12:30 a.m., police stopped a vehicle that had gone through a red light.
“The driver pulled over onto the wrong side of the road on Albert Street,” police said.
“Upon speaking with the driver, officers developed grounds to believe their ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol.”
The accused provided multiple breath samples into an approved screening device and all registered above the legal limit. The 31-year-old suspect is charged with two impaired driving offences.
They were released with a Sept. 9 court date.
