Hwy 537 shutdown due to flooding

A highway in Greater Sudbury is still closed Friday.
Highway 537 was shutdown to traffic Thursday near the town of Wanup because of flooding.
The same stretch of road regularly washes out this time of the year and the flooding can make for detours, causing headaches for residents and delays in the event of an emergency.
Deb McIntosh is a Greater Sudbury city councillor who has been working with the Ministry of Transportation to make improvements to the road and prevent closures.
"They've done the design work and the environmental study is currently underway. They're going to be inserting two culverts under the highway and they're going to be raising the grade of the highway. In order to accommodate the raise in the roadway, they’re also going to be widening it in that area. So, then water will go under the highway, rather than flooding over top of the highway." said McIntosh.
The Ward 9 councillor says work on the road is expected to begin this summer and will be completed the following year.
