The food bank in Sault Ste. Marie is hoping that its fundraisers named after a popular book and movie franchise will help stock its shelves for the summer.

St Vincent Place hosted its first-ever ‘Fight the Hunger Games Family Day’ fundraiser where children played games to earn tickets for prizes.

Earlier in the week, the food bank held a food drive called ‘Fill the District,’ another theme inspired by the series.

Organizers say the summer is a busy time for the food bank, but it can be tough to keep up with the demand.

"We don't get a whole lot of donations in the summer at the food bank.  So running this food drive and this fundraiser is actually important to the food bank to being able to help the people that we do." Said Sara McCleary, of St Vincent Place food bank.

During the summer, the food bank helps on average 170 families each month.
