SUDBURY -- Human remains have been discovered in a "very desolate area" in the northwest section of the Kirkland Lake OPP detachment area, CTV News has learned.

Staff Sgt. Ryan Dougan said police are still investigating the identity of the person who was found.

In a news release on Wednesday morning, OPP said officers responded to a call for service in a remote area in Holmes Township, northeast of Matachewan, on June 4 around 8:39 p.m.

"The OPP attended the wooded area and after further investigation, located human remains. The identification of the remains are undetermined at this time," police said.

An investigation by the OPP North East Region Crime Unit is continuing with the help of the chief coroner's office, a forensic anthropologist, forensic identification services, emergency response team and canine unit.

Kirkland Lake OPP is expected to issue further updates once the remains are identified.
