Ghosts and goblins will rule the streets Wednesday night in search of candy because it's Halloween of course.

Here are some fast facts on Halloween:

  • All Hallows Eve is believed to have started from ancient Celtic harvest festivals
  • The traditions of wearing costumes to ward off ghosts and offering food to sooth evil spirits were brought to Canada by Celtic immigrants in the mid to late 1800's.
  • In the 19th century, children began dressing up and would perform songs; recite poems or do tricks for treats, usually nuts, fruit or coins.
  • And in the past 50 or years or so, that has shifted to candy, chocolate and nut-free alternatives.

But social media revisits the ongoing debate: what age is too old to go trick-or-treating?

Some states in the U.S. have prohibited kids aged 12 and older from going out door-to-door on the holiday.

But can one really be too old to go trick-or-treating?

This conversation has been going on for a couple weeks on one of CTV Northern Ontario’s Facebook posts and has generated almost 200 comments.

And there are opinions from both sides, as well as some interesting suggestions.

Some say you’re never too old, with many saying as long as you put in effort with your costume, they don’t mind giving out candy.

Those who believe there should be an age limit attracted a lot of reaction from others:

To which some one commented with a party pooper meme and another asked:

And finally one man offered an interesting solution that many agreed with:
